Set Default option

Your documentation is not clear on this, but when I am editing elements in the footer, such as the copyright, the creator link, or added text, does the "Is Default" checkbox setting the position I choose for the element as the default position, or is it moving it to a default position that I set elsewhere?  I'm confused because the behavior doesn't seem to be matching where I'm setting these elements on the Home Page where this option is missing when setting up a Wordpress Theme with content.

Where exactly am I setting this default element setting?

If the "Is Default" checkbox is selected, it is applying the default position you have chosen for the element. But if you change the position of that element, the checkbox will be automatically unselected.
