adding div/widget areatinto the header

hi

please can somebody tell me if it is possible to add a div tag or element into the header. I'm wanting to add a number of separate images at either end of the header but I want to add images as a CSSbackground so I can alter the size of the image when the screen gets ever increasingly smaller when using a responsive layout!
