can a widget be placed onto a column?

I see on the module tab that a widget can be placed onto 4 different areas of a template but I have also read that a widget can be placed onto any area of a joomla template. Is this possible?

Hey,

The widget areas option is given in the Module Position tab only allows you to place widgets inside Header, Slideshow, Menu, and Footer. But we have Module Position present in all positions of the page like Above Header, Below Header, Above Content, Below Content, Above menu, Below menu, etc. The module positions and widget areas can't be placed inside the content.
