header slideshow background transparency during transition

Question

I'm using a slideshow in the header with the Fade transition. The problem is it fades the header background color out then in during the transition - the header becomes almost transparent and then solid again. I think having the whole header fade out and in is too distracting. Is there a way to make the transition smoother?
