Favicon limited to 16x16

Question

Not found any other references to this so thought I would ask.

I tried to reuse the favicon I created for an Artisteer generated theme in TT, but TT rejects it reporting that it must be 16x16.
The existing 64x64 favicon seems to work fine in the real world (tested in IE8, FF and Chrome) so I think TT should provide more flexibility in allowing larger favicons.

There seems some debate about the 'official' size, with W3C stating up to 32x32 (here - http://www.w3.org/2005/10/howto-favicon), that fountatin of impeccable knowledge, Wikipedia says up to 64x64.
The HTML5 spec provides significant flexibility also - http://www.w3.org/html/wg/drafts/html/master/links.html#rel-icon

Any thoughts?

You're right, it will only accept 16x16 and that's not a good thing. My ico files usually contain several different resolutions. Hope that fix gets added to the wish list...

Similar to the favicon, I just discovered that an icon can only be 8 x 8. This applies to the menus and possibly anything else that uses an 'icon', whereas the Content->Unordered List is happy for me to use my 12x12 image as a bullet. This restriction seems fairly arbitrary.

Is there a 'templating' reason that icons can only be 8x8? Surely from a design perspective, the user should be able to have more flexibility both in size and shape (not just square). Sure, the user could shoot themselves in the foot, but since they can do that in so many other ways anyway, it would seem odd to restrict creativity for the sake of daft users in this fairly minor instance.
